DC-KJV and JE-D&C 8

Annotation of D&C 8 – preliminary

D&C 8 is a good example because it shows that a high percentage of Joseph Smith’s language is also KJV language. Few of the KJV words/phrases are not also found in Edwards, including the so-called "blended" passages.

The blue D&C words/phrases in the annotation are nonbiblical and also not found in Edwards. In some cases noted below, the nonbiblical language is close to Edwards (e.g., plural instead of singular). There are several examples in the Book of Mormon and D&C of paraphrased or misquoted passages from the KJV that are identical to paraphrased or misquoted KJV passages in Edwards' works.

The red words/phrases are nonbiblical D&C wording that are also found in Edwards' works.

Purple are nonbiblical D&C words/phrases similar to Edwards.

Naturally, Edwards is not the only person who ever used this nonbiblical Book of Mormon terminology. English is a common language or we couldn't understand one another. But the ready availability of Edwards' works in Palmyra during Joseph's youth indicates that Edwards was a possible source for Joseph's vocabulary that he used when translating the plates and receiving revelations.

Bold = KJV

Blue = nonbiblical BofM/D&C w/o JE (If unique to this instance, no footnote is given)

Red = nonbiblical BofM/D&C and JE

Purple = nonbiblical BofM/D&C similar to JE

Section 8

Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet to Oliver Cowdery, at Harmony, Pennsylvania, April 1829. In the course of the translation of the Book of Mormon, Oliver, who continued to serve as scribe, writing at the Prophet’s dictation, desired to be endowed with the gift of translation. The Lord responded to his supplication by granting this revelation.

1–5, Revelation comes by the power of the Holy Ghost;

6–12, Knowledge of the mysteries of God and the power to translate ancient records come by faith.

1 Oliver Cowdery, verily, verily, I say unto you, that assuredly[1] as the Lord liveth[2], who is your God and your Redeemer[3], even so surely[4] shall you receive a knowledge[5] of whatsoever things[6] you shall ask in faith[7], with an honest heart[8], believing that[9] you shall receive a knowledge concerning[10] the engravings of old records, which are ancient, which contain those parts of my scripture of which has been spoken[11] by the manifestation[12] of my Spirit.

2 Yea, behold, I will tell you in your mind[13] and in your heart[14], by the Holy Ghost[15], which shall come upon you[16] and which shall dwell in your heart.

3 Now, behold, this is the spirit of revelation[17]; behold, this is the spirit[18] by which Moses brought[19] the children of Israel[20] through the Red Sea on dry ground[21].

4 Therefore this is thy gift; apply unto it[22], and blessed art thou, for it shall deliver you[23] out of the hands[24] of your enemies[25], when, if it were not so[26], they would slay you[27] and bring your soul to destruction.

5 Oh, remember these words, and keep my commandments. Remember, this is your gift[28].

6 Now this is not all thy gift; for you have another gift[29], which is the gift of Aaron; behold, it has told you many things;

7 Behold, there is no other power[30], save the power of God[31], that can cause this gift of Aaron to be with you.

8 Therefore, doubt not[32], for it is the gift of God[33]; and you shall hold it in your hands[34], and do marvelous works[35]; and no power shall be able to take it away out of your hands[36], for it is the work of God[37].

9 And, therefore, whatsoever you shall ask me to tell you by that means[38], that will I grant unto you[39], and you shall have knowledge concerning it.

10 Remember that without faith[40] you can do nothing[41]; therefore ask in faith. Trifle[42] not with these things; do not ask[43] for that which you ought not[44].

11 Ask that you may know the mysteries of God[45], and that you may translate and receive knowledge[46] from all those ancient records which have been hid up[47], that are sacred; and according to your faith[48] shall it be done[49] unto you[50].

12 Behold, it is I that have spoken it; and I am the same that spake unto you from the beginning. Amen.
