BM-KJV and JE-Alma 13

Annotation of Alma 13

Alma 13 is a good example because it shows that a high percentage of Book of Mormon language is also KJV language. Few of the KJV words/phrases are not also found in Edwards, including the so-called "blended" passages.

The blue Book of Mormon words/phrases in the annotation are nonbiblical and also not found in Edwards. In some cases noted below, the nonbiblical language is close to Edwards (e.g., plural instead of singular). There are several examples in the Book of Mormon of paraphrased or misquoted passages from the KJV that are identical to paraphrased or misquoted KJV passages in Edwards' works.

The red words/phrases are nonbiblical Book of Mormon wording that are also found in Edwards' works.

Naturally, Edwards is not the only person who ever used this nonbiblical Book of Mormon terminology. English is a common language or we couldn't understand one another. But the ready availability of Edwards' works in Palmyra during Joseph's youth indicates that Edwards was a possible source for Joseph's vocabulary that he used when translating the plates.

Chapter 13

Men are called as high priests because of their exceeding faith and good works—They are to teach the commandments—Through righteousness they are sanctified and enter into the rest of the Lord—Melchizedek was one of these—Angels are declaring glad tidings throughout the land—They will declare the actual coming of Christ. About 82 B.C.

1 And again, my brethren, I would cite[1] your minds[2] forward to the time[3] when the Lord God gave these commandments[4] unto his children[5]; and I would that[6] ye should remember[7] that the Lord God ordained priests, after his holy order[8], which was after the order of his Son[9], to teach these things[10] unto the people.

2 And those priests were ordained[11] after the order of his Son, in a manner that[12] thereby the people might know[13] in what manner to look forward to[14] his Son for redemption[15].

3 And this is the manner after which[16] they were ordained—being called and[17] prepared[18] from the foundation of the world[19] according to the foreknowledge[20] of God, on account of[21] their exceeding[22] faith and good works[23]; in the first place[24] being left to choose[25] good or evil[26]; therefore they having chosen good[27], and exercising exceedingly great faith[28], are called with a holy calling[29], yea, with that holy calling which was prepared with, and according to, a preparatory[30] redemption[31] for such.

4 And thus they have been called to this holy calling on account of their faith, while others would reject the Spirit of God[32] on account of the hardness of their hearts[33] and blindness of their minds[34], while, if it had not been for this they might have had as great privilege[35] as their brethren.

5 Or in fine[36], in the first place they were on the same standing[37] with their brethren; thus this holy calling being prepared from the foundation of the world for such as would not harden their hearts[38], being in and through[39] the atonement[40] of the Only Begotten Son[41], who was prepared[42]

6 And thus being called by this holy calling, and ordained unto the high priesthood[43] of the holy order of God, to teach his commandments unto the children of men, that they also might enter into his rest—

7 This high priesthood being after the order of his Son, which order was from the foundation of the world; or in other words, being without beginning of days[44] or end of years[45], being prepared from eternity to all eternity[46], according to his foreknowledge of all things—

8 Now they were ordained after this manner[47]—being called with a holy calling, and ordained with a holy ordinance[48], and taking upon them[49] the high priesthood of the holy order, which calling, and ordinance, and high priesthood, is without beginning or end[50]

9 Thus they become high priests forever[51], after the order of the Son, the Only Begotten of the Father, who is without beginning of days or end of years, who is full of grace, equity, and truth[52]. And thus it is. Amen.

10 Now, as I said concerning the holy order, or this high priesthood, there were many who were ordained and became high priests of God; and it was on account of their exceeding faith and repentance[53], and their righteousness before God[54], they choosing to repent[55] and work righteousness[56] rather than to perish[57];

11 Therefore they were called[58] after this holy order, and were sanctified, and their garments[59] were washed white[60] through the blood of the Lamb[61].

12 Now they, after being sanctified by the Holy Ghost[62], having their garments made white[63], being pure and spotless[64] before God, could not look upon sin[65] save it were with abhorrence[66]; and there were many, exceedingly great many[67], who were made pure[68] and entered into the rest[69] of the Lord their God.

13 And now, my brethren, I would that ye should humble yourselves before God, and bring forth fruit meet for repentance[70], that ye may also enter into that rest[71].

14 Yea, humble yourselves[72] even as the people in the days of Melchizedek[73], who was also a high priest[74] after this same order which I have spoken, who also took upon him the high priesthood forever.

15 And it was this same Melchizedek to whom Abraham paid tithes[75]; yea, even our father Abraham[76] paid tithes of one-tenth part of all he possessed[77].

16 Now these ordinances were given after this manner, that thereby the people might look forward[78] on the Son of God[79], it being a type[80] of his order[81], or it being his order, and this that they might look forward to him for a remission of their sins[82], that they might enter into the rest of the Lord[83].

17 Now this Melchizedek was a king over the land of Salem; and his people had waxed strong[84] in iniquity and abomination[85]; yea, they had all gone astray[86]; they were full of all manner of wickedness[87];

18 But Melchizedek having exercised mighty faith[88], and received the office of the high priesthood according to the holy order of God, did preach repentance[89] unto his people. And behold, they did repent; and Melchizedek did establish peace[90] in the land in his days; therefore he was called the prince of peace[91], for he was the king of Salem[92]; and he did reign under his father.

19 Now, there were many before him[93], and also there were many afterwards[94], but none were greater; therefore, of him they have more particularly[95] made mention[96].

20 Now I need not rehearse[97] the matter; what I have said may suffice[98]. Behold, the scriptures[99] are before you[100]; if ye will wrest[101] them it shall be to your own destruction[102].

21 And now it came to pass that when Alma had said these words unto them, he stretched forth his hand[103] unto them and cried with a mighty voice[104], saying: Now is the time to repent[105], for the day of salvation[106] draweth nigh[107];

22 Yea, and the voice of the Lord[108], by the mouth of angels[109], doth declare it[110] unto all nations[111]; yea, doth declare it, that they may have glad tidings[112] of great joy[113]; yea, and he doth sound these glad tidings among all his people, yea, even to them that are scattered abroad upon the face of the earth[114]; wherefore they have come unto us.

23 And they are made known[115] unto us in plain terms[116], that we may understand[117], that we cannot err[118]; and this because of our being wanderers in[119] a strange land[120]; therefore, we are thus highly favored[121], for we have these glad tidings declared unto us in all parts[122] of our vineyard.

24 For behold, angels are declaring it unto many at this time in our land; and this is for the purpose of[123] preparing the hearts[124] of the children of men[125] to receive his word[126] at the time of his coming[127] in his glory.

25 And now we only wait to hear[128] the joyful news[129] declared unto us by the mouth of angels, of his coming; for the time cometh, we know not how soon[130]. Would to God[131] that it might be in my day[132]; but let it be[133] sooner or later[134], in it I will rejoice[135].

26 And it shall be made known unto just and holy[136] men, by the mouth of angels, at the time of his coming, that the words of our fathers[137] may be fulfilled[138], according to that which they have spoken concerning him[139], which was according to the spirit of prophecy[140] which was in them.

27 And now, my brethren, I wish from the inmost[141] part of my heart[142], yea, with great anxiety[143] even unto pain[144], that ye would hearken unto my words, and cast off[145] your sins[146], and not procrastinate[147] the day of your repentance;

28 But that ye would humble yourselves before the Lord, and call on his holy name[148], and watch and[149] pray continually[150], that ye may not be tempted above[151] that which ye can bear[152], and thus be led by the Holy Spirit[153], becoming humble[154], meek[155], submissive[156], patient[157], full of love[158] and all long-suffering[159];

29 Having faith[160] on the Lord; having a hope[161] that ye shall receive eternal life[162]; having the[163] love of God[164] always[165] in your hearts[166], that ye may be lifted up[167] at the last day[168] and enter into his rest[169].

30 And may the Lord grant unto you repentance[170], that ye may not bring down his wrath[171] upon you, that ye may not be bound down[172] by the chains of hell[173], that ye may not suffer[174] the second death[175].

31 And Alma spake many more words unto the people, which are not written in this book[176].
