To avoid the debates about where, exactly, in Mesoamerica the Book of Mormon sites are located, educators at BYU (Brigham Young University) and CES (Church Educational System) have developed "internal maps" based on the Mesoamerican-driven interpretation of the text. These "internal maps" take the M2C maps and rotate them for a north/south orientation instead of the east/west orientation of Mesoamerica, but otherwise they closely follow the M2C interpretation, including Cumorah near the sea, far from New York.
Because these maps depict a hypothetical setting found nowhere on Earth, some observers consider these "internal maps" to be tantamount to rejecting the Book of Mormon as an actual history.
