BM-KJV and JE-Moroni 10

Annotation of Moroni 10 – preliminary

Moroni 10 is a good example because it shows that a high percentage of Book of Mormon language is also KJV language. Few of the KJV words/phrases are not also found in Edwards, including the so-called "blended" passages.

The blue Book of Mormon words/phrases in the annotation are nonbiblical and also not found in Edwards. In some cases noted below, the nonbiblical language is close to Edwards (e.g., plural instead of singular). There are several examples in the Book of Mormon of paraphrased or misquoted passages from the KJV that are identical to paraphrased or misquoted KJV passages in Edwards' works.

The red words/phrases are nonbiblical Book of Mormon wording that are also found in Edwards' works.

Purple are nonbiblical Book of Mormon words/phrases similar to Edwards.

Naturally, Edwards is not the only person who ever used this nonbiblical Book of Mormon terminology. English is a common language or we couldn't understand one another. But the ready availability of Edwards' works in Palmyra during Joseph's youth indicates that Edwards was a possible source for Joseph's vocabulary that he used when translating the plates.

Chapter 10

A testimony of the Book of Mormon comes by the power of the Holy Ghost—The gifts of the Spirit are dispensed to the faithful—Spiritual gifts always accompany faith—Moroni’s words speak from the dust—Come unto Christ, be perfected in Him, and sanctify your souls. About A.D. 421.

1 Now I, Moroni, write somewhat[1] as seemeth me good[2]; and I write unto my brethren, the Lamanites; and I would that they should know[3] that more than four hundred and twenty years have passed away since the sign was given[4] of the coming of Christ[5].

2 And I seal up these records, after I have spoken a few words[6] by way of[7] exhortation[8] unto you.

3 Behold, I would exhort you[9] that when ye shall read these things, if it be[10] wisdom in God[11] that ye should read them, that ye would remember how merciful[12] the Lord hath been unto the children of men[13], from the creation of Adam[14] even down until the time that ye shall receive these things[15], and ponder it in your hearts[16].

4 And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you[17] that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father[18], in the name of Christ[19], if these things are not true[20]; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart[21], with real intent[22], having faith in Christ[23], he will manifest the truth[24] of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost[25].

5 And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all[26] things[27].

6 And whatsoever thing is good is just and true[28]; wherefore, nothing that is good[29] denieth the Christ, but acknowledgeth that he is.

7 And ye may know that he is, by the power of the Holy Ghost; wherefore I would exhort you that ye deny not[30] the power of God[31]; for he worketh by power, according to the faith[32] of the children of men, the same today and tomorrow, and forever.

8 And again, I exhort you, my brethren, that ye deny not the gifts of God[33], for they are many[34]; and they come from the same God[35]. And there are different ways[36] that these gifts are administered; but it is the same God who worketh all in all[37]; and they are given by the manifestations of the Spirit[38] of God unto men, to profit them[39].

9 For behold, to one is given[40] by the Spirit of God[41], that he may teach[42] the word of wisdom[43];

10 And to another, that he may teach the word of knowledge[44] by the same Spirit;

11 And to another, exceedingly great faith[45]; and to another, the gifts of healing[46] by the same Spirit;

12 And again, to another, that he may work mighty miracles[47];

13 And again, to another, that he may prophesy concerning all things[48];

14 And again, to another, the beholding of angels and ministering spirits[49];

15 And again, to another, all[50] kinds of tongues[51];

16 And again, to another, the interpretation of languages and of divers kinds of tongues.

17 And all these gifts[52] come[53] by the Spirit of Christ[54]; and they come unto every man severally[55], according[56] as he will[57].

18 And I would exhort you, my beloved brethren, that ye remember[58] that every good gift[59] cometh of Christ.

19 And I would exhort you, my beloved brethren, that ye remember that he is the same yesterday, today, and forever[60], and that all these gifts of which I have spoken[61], which are spiritual[62], never will be[63] done away[64], even as long as[65] the world shall stand[66], only according to[67] the unbelief of[68] the children of men.

20 Wherefore, there must be faith[69]; and if there must be faith there must also be[70] hope; and if there must be hope there must also be charity.

21 And except ye have[71] charity ye can in nowise[72] be saved in the kingdom of God[73]; neither can ye be saved in the kingdom of God if ye have not faith[74]; neither can ye if ye have no hope[75].

22 And if ye have no hope ye must needs be[76] in despair[77]; and despair cometh because of iniquity[78].

23 And Christ truly said[79] unto our fathers: If ye have faith ye can do all things[80] which are expedient[81] unto me.

24 And now I speak unto all the[82] ends of the earth[83]—that if the day cometh that the power and gifts[84] of God shall be done away[85] among you, it shall be because of unbelief[86].

25 And wo be unto the children of men if this be the case[87]; for there shall be none[88] that doeth good among you, no not one[89]. For if there be one among you[90] that doeth good, he shall work by the power and gifts of God.

26 And wo unto them who shall do these things away and die, for they die in their sins[91], and they cannot be[92] saved[93] in the kingdom of God[94]; and I speak it according to the words[95] of Christ; and I lie not[96].

27 And I exhort you to remember these things[97]; for the time[98] speedily[99] cometh that ye shall know that I lie not, for ye shall see me at the bar of[100] God[101]; and the Lord God will say unto you: Did I not declare[102] my words unto you, which were written by this man, like as one crying from the dead, yea, even as one speaking out of the dust[103]?

28 I declare these things[104] unto the fulfilling of the prophecies[105]. And behold, they shall proceed forth[106] out of the mouth[107] of the everlasting God[108]; and his word shall hiss forth[109] from generation to generation[110].

29 And God shall show unto you, that that which[111] I have written[112] is true.

30 And again I would exhort you that ye would come unto Christ[113], and lay hold upon[114] every good gift[115], and touch not[116] the evil gift, nor the unclean thing[117].

31 And awake, and[118] arise[119] from the dust[120], O Jerusalem; yea, and put on thy beautiful garments[121], O daughter of Zion[122]; and strengthen thy stakes[123] and enlarge thy borders[124] forever, that thou mayest no more[125] be confounded[126], that the covenants of[127] the Eternal Father[128] which he hath made unto thee, O house of Israel, may be fulfilled[129].

32 Yea, come unto Christ, and be perfected[130] in him, and deny yourselves[131] of all ungodliness[132]; and if ye shall deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God[133] with all your might[134], mind and strength[135], then is his grace sufficient for you[136], that by his grace[137] ye may be perfect in Christ[138]; and if by the grace of God[139] ye are perfect in Christ, ye can in nowise deny the power[140] of God.

33 And again, if ye by the grace of God are perfect in Christ, and deny not his power, then are ye sanctified in Christ[141] by the grace of God, through the shedding[142] of the blood of Christ[143], which is in the covenant[144] of the Father[145] unto the remission of your sins[146], that ye become holy[147], without spot[148].

34 And now I bid unto all, farewell. I soon go to rest in the paradise of God[149], until my spirit and body[150] shall again reunite[151], and I am brought forth triumphant[152] through the air[153], to meet you[154] before the pleasing[155] bar of the great Jehovah[156], the Eternal Judge of both quick and dead[157]. Amen.
